Future Hyundai self-driving cars will provide customized experience

By combining Machine Learning with its Smart Cruise Control, Hyundai hopes to create a system that drivers are likely to use more frequently because it reacts the same way that they do and feels more natural.

Hyundai has announced a world's first technology that it called Machine Learning based Smart Cruise Control (SCC-ML).

In recent years, a host of carmakers have added advanced driver assistance systems to their models for safer and more convenient driving. Hyundai says that the tech is an industry first and plans to implement the technology in the future.

Hyundai Motor said such technology considers driving preference in largely three categories: distance with a vehicle in front, acceleration and responsiveness to the driving environment, such as traffic conditions and obstacles on the road.

Hyundai's machine-learning algorithm learns how a driver would follow the auto on the freeway.

Smart Cruise Control enables an essential self-driving feature and core technology for ADAS: maintaining distance from the vehicle ahead while traveling at the speed selected by the driver. "Hyundai Motor Group will continue the development efforts on innovative AI technologies to lead the industry in the field of autonomous driving". "It was impossible to meticulously fine-tune the settings to accommodate the diver's individual preferences without machine learning technology", Hyundai said. The system can distinguish between driving patterns in different circumstances, like distance from the vehicle in front in traffic and the high-speed lane on a highway.

It gathers data from the car's camera and radar, constantly watching driver behaviour and feeding information to the car's centralised computer.

The end result is that this driving system, which achieves Level 2.5 self-driving capability, drives autonomously in an identical style to the driver. It then runs the data through a machine learning algorithm to mimic their driving style. Artificial intelligence then works its craft to determine three key things: following distance, acceleration and overall responsiveness. It's also important to note that SCC-ML is programmed in such a way that it can avoid learning unsafe driving patterns, thus increasing its reliability and safety. In addition, driving conditions and speeds are considered as well.
