The new PvP system will be called GO Battle League and will make its debut early next year.

Will you be trying out this new feature when it launches early next year? Presumably there will be several tiers in which trainers compete, which should allow you to try and finally become a true master of Pokemon Go.

The Pokemon Go Battle League will be different to the current PvP system as it won't require Friend Codes. Just like many other Pokemon GO features, GO Battle League will encourage players to explore the world with Pokemon.

Niantic says the Go Battle League will "build upon" trainer battles as they now exist in Pokémon Go, and even though it's geared toward PvP, players will still be "encouraged" to "explore the world".

"We're excited to announce the development of a feature that will build upon Trainer Battles", Niantic said in its Monday blog post.

As impressive as Pokémon GO is, one thing that's been missing from it for a long time now is online battles. You can then battle opponents from around the globe through a matchmaking system and rise up in the ranks.

Could Pokemon Go finally become a competitive battling game, though? A Dev Insights video will also be released later with more details.

And the announcement that online PvP gameplay is coming soon will be seen as one of the final pieces of the Pokemon Go puzzle.
