The weather service said crews were headed out Monday morning to determine whether straight line winds or small tornadoes caused the damage.

A house owned by Dallas Stars forward Tyler Seguin was severely damaged by a tornado on Sunday night.

A tornado watch alert issued by the Storm Prediction Center on Google said the warning covered 23 counties in Texas, stretching from Mason County in the south west of the state to the city of Paris in the northeast.

Emergency services are checking for any victims amid fallen trees, torn roofs, downed power lines and damaged cars. Though the tornado cut through a densely populated area, no storm-related deaths have been reported, according to the city's official website.

According to power company Oncor, almost 112,000 customers were affected by outages.

Dallas Fire-Rescue says there have been no reports of fatalities or serious injuries in the aftermath of a Sunday night tornado, but three people were hospitalized for evaluation of non-life-threatening injuries. Approximately 35 traffic signals aren't communicating.

Meanwhile, the line of storms responsible for the tornado threatened parts of the Plains with more severe weather.

The storm also forced numerous schools to close.

Six schools canceled classes on Monday due to the damage to their campuses.

"When other people's homes are in your front yard, you just realize - just the magnitude of the storm", said Lauren Collins, 36.

The network also reported that roofs had been damaged on homes near Richland College and that windows had been blown out of a store near I-635.

A tornado that touched down in northern Dallas left more than 100,000 without power, as the severe storm system lashes parts of the Great Plains. Seguin is selling the home but living in another one, he said. "We are also working with local power and gas utilities to support their efforts". "And the people of Texas can rest assured that the state will do everything it can to assist those affected by these horrific storms". Around 8 p.m. CDT, Gainesville, Texas, received hail ranging from 2 inches in diameter to the size of tennis balls.

Addressing a news conference on Monday morning, Dallas mayor Eric Johnson said the city was lucky this time.
