It followed the agreement earlier this year in the Brecon and Radnorshire by-election in Wales, where the Liberal Democrats took the seat from the Conservative Party after the other two parties stood aside.

The agreement was struck under the "Unite to Remain" banner, led by outgoing Liberal Democrat MP Heidi Allen. In that seat the Greens and Plaid Cymru stood aside for the Lib Dem candidate, who ousted the sitting Conservative MP, Chris Davies.

Allen, who is leaving politics at this election after spells with the Tories, Change UK and the Lib Dems, said: "This is a Brexit election, and staying in the European Union is possible - and this is the deciding moment".

"With a single remain candidate in each of these seats we can deliver a greater number of MPs into parliament".

Tory Chairman James Cleverly has reportedly written to the Electoral Commission demanding the watchdog probes Unite To Remain - the third-party campaign group credited with forging the alliance - suggesting it could break spending laws. They also did this in the 2017 general election.

The electoral pact will cover 61 constituencies across England and Wales.

In the Isle of Wight and Brighton Pavilion, the Greens will be given a free run, while in the constituencies of Richmond Park and Cheltenham, the Lib Dems will be unopposed by other Remain-backing parties.

Adam Price, leader of Plaid Cymru, said: "In these deeply serious times, we need grown-up politics that puts our countries before parties".

Unite to Remain's directors include the Labour peer and former cabinet minister Jim Knight and Jessica Simor, a remain-supporting QC.
