Iran has claimed to have shot down drones before, only for further news on the incidents not to be made public.

Iran shot down a drone belonging to a foreign country on Friday, state news agency IRNA reported an official as saying.

Provincial governor Gholamreza Shariati told IRNA that the drone belonged to a "foreign" country and that parts of the drone had been recovered in a nearby lagoon. Iranian news agencies said the drone was shot down in the country's airspace.

A US Defense official told the MailOnline: 'There are no reports of a USA drone being shot down'. "If a UAS had gone down in the CENTCOM AOR it was not a #DoD asset", Central Command said in a statement.

The Students News Agency ISNA and the Young Journalists Club (YJC), affiliated to Iran's state broadcasting, said "an unknown flying object" had been shot down by the Iranian army, adding that the report had yet to be confirmed by Iranian officials.

The agency also ran a short video purporting to show a missile launched in the early morning that it said hit the drone.

Shariati said the drone violated Iran's airspace.

Trump in June authorised a military strike after Iran shot down a U.S. drone, only to call off the retaliation at the last moment. Washington said the USA drone had been shot down by Iran in worldwide airspace over the Strait of Hormuz in the Gulf.

Neither news agency gave any further details of the incident which comes amid soaring tensions between Tehran and Washington since President Donald Trump unilaterally abandoned a landmark 2015 nuclear deal a year ago and reimposed crippling sanctions.

Israel says it has carried out hundreds of air strikes in neighboring Syria, some of them against Iranian targets, to prevent Tehran from establishing a presence there.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu hinted in August of possible Israeli involvement in attacks on Iranian-backed militia positions in Iraq.
