This facility is a joint venture between Volkswagen and SAIC. As the seventh member of the ID concept vehicle family that has already spawned the ID.3 production model, the Space Vizzion1 will make its world debut at the Los Angeles Auto Show later in November.

Once it's fully up and running, the Anting plant is estimated to have an annual production capacity of 300,000 units.

Next in the pipeline is the ID Space Vizzion, which VW describes as a vehicle with the aerodynamic characteristics of a sleek grand tourer and the spaciousness of an SUV. "The start of series production of all-electric cars based on the MEB platform in Anting is scheduled for October 2020". In conjunction with an FAW-Volkswagen joint-venture factory in Foshan, China, the German automaker will have the ability to assemble around 600,000 electric vehicles per year in the People's Republic. At the 2018 Geneva show, when the ID Vizzion fastback was revealed, CEO Herbert Diess called the concept "the most personal, most emotional, and most individual Volkswagen of all times". By 2025, up to 15 different MEB-based models for a range of Volkswagen Group brands are expected to be assembled in China.

But it's destined to be more than just a show auto, with VW confirming that a production version will hit the streets in China in late 2021, while different versions for Europe and North America will also be introduced in due course.

Volkswagen's new Anting factory is created to be as efficient as the cars it produces. The area utilization is highly increased, meaning less land and built-up space is needed compared to a standard plant.

"The Volkswagen Group projects a total volume of 22 million all-electric cars worldwide by 2028, with more than 50 percent of that from China". Congratulations to our colleagues in Anting, who will further prepare to produce the first China-model of the Volkswagen ID. family here in Shanghai. The country plays a crucial part in our electrification strategy, which will pave the way to Volkswagen's goal of becoming net carbon-neutral by 2050.
