After a few months of collaboration, the Apple Pay Express Transit feature now works for all Transport for London services, including the Underground, buses and trams – anywhere there is a yellow reader.

Apple has been alerting customers in the United Kingdom about this news by email, pointing them to a new page on its website with more details. Available on Apple's premium iPhone XR or later, the facility enables user's to keep travelling up to five hours after the red Power Reserve icon appears..

"It is a step change in the way we think about how to charge people, the notion of having to understand what ticket you need, do I need an Oyster Card", explained Mike Tuckett, head of transformation delivery for TfL.

To set up a card for use with Express Transit mode, open the Settings app on your iPhone and tap Wallet & Apple Pay Express Transit Card.

The Express Transit feature means commuters will experience shorter payment times when they tap in to the Tube using their iPhone or Apple Watch.

The new Express Mode feature will work on iPhone SE, iPhone 6s, or iPhone 6s Plus or later and for all Apple Watch models after Series 1. Select a card and then authenticate with Face ID, Touch ID, or your passcode.

You can enable Express Mode, called Express Transit in the United States, via the Wallet & Apple Pay settings.

It's the first time Express Transit has been enabled in the United Kingdom, after countries including China and Japan, as well as a trial in NY.
