Duke won the division in 2013 before it went to Georgia Tech in 2014, North Carolina in 2015, Virginia Tech in 2016, Miami in 2017, Pittsburgh in 2018 and finally Virginia - the only team that hadn't won it - this season.

Perkins, who said after the game that he spent a night in the hospital with tonsillitis after Virginia's 55-27 win over Liberty, and then had a procedure on Monday to remove fluid from his tonsils, had a career game, throwing for 311 yards and a touchdown, and running for 164 yards and two scores on the ground.

The Cavaliers won 39-30 over the Hokies. Virginia Tech QB Hendon Hooker also threw for 311 yards as the Hokies outscored the Cavaliers 21-7 in the third quarter to take a 27-20 lead.

The victory secured Virginia's first coastal ACC title and its appearance in next week's ACC Championship game against Clemson.

That's because Notre Dame's September 28 opponent, who the Irish got by after a dominating defensive second half, won a thriller in Charlottesville, Virginia.

With fans singing "UVa! UVa!" With 61 seconds left, UVA defensive end Mandy Alonso tackled Hooker in the end zone and forced a fumble, and defensive tackle Eli Hanback recovered it for what was basically the game-ending touchdown. He had 137 rushing yards in the opening quarter. Hooker opened the third quarter with a 30-yard pitch to Damon Hazelton in the midfield.

Quarterback play is critical in every game, but it's magnified in this one. He had one touchdown pass and two interceptions.

Virginia looked like several defenders stumbled trying to chase down the downed Hooker as he made his way through the field.

Virginia jumped out to a 13-6 halftime lead thanks to two long touchdown runs by quarterback Bryce Perkins.

Brian Delaney's game did not get off to a great start as he missed the extra point on Virginia's first touchdown drive.

His defense gave up 492 yards of total offense, all but 17 of those attributed to Perkins. He finished a streak of five triples (and six straight punts) for the Cavaliers. Perkins scored on a 39-yard rushing touchdown.

Virginia: Perkins started slowly throwing the ball but used those two huge draw play runs to cause the Hokies to have to adjust.

"I think Virginia Tech's brand has become stronger this year as they played, and their identity has become clearer of how their offense, defense and special teams fit together", said Virginia coach Bronco Mendenhall, who has identified beating Virginia Tech as a top priority since his arrival four years ago.

UVA knotted the score at 27-27 on a 2-yard TD run by Wayne Taulapapa with 13:30 to go.
