Waukesha school resource officer exchange gunfire, suspect in custody

An armed Wisconsin high school student who reportedly did "not comply" with a school resource officer's order to hand over the gun was shot by the officer inside the school building in a harrowing Monday morning incident.

A school spokesman says a student exchanged gunfire with a school resource officer at a suburban Milwaukee high school.

Waukesha police responded to South High School around 11 a.m. Monday.

He said officers performed life-saving measures on the suspect, who is in custody and in stable condition.

Jack says Waukesha officers and sheriff's deputies soon arrived to de-escalate the situation but the suspect "continued to ignore officers' commands".

The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports shots were exchanged between a student and a school resource officer.

The high school is on lockdown, as well as Whittier Elementary School nearby. She said the school would issue a statement later.

The Waukesha Freeman reported that a male was put into an ambulance.

Students who streamed out of the school about 11:15 a.m. said a drill was announced and they took cover under desks and teachers barricaded doors.

Officials told KTLA sister station WITI in Milwaukee that gunshots were fired inside the school. We are not seeking anybody else we have no other persons of interest.

Waukesha is a city of about 70,000 residents 20 miles west of Milwaukee.
