Andrew "Greedy" Smith has died aged 63.

Smith formed Mental As Anything in Sydney in 1976 alongside Reg Mombassa, Martin Plaza, Wayne "Bird" de Lisle and Peter O'Doherty.

"He loved touring. He absolutely loved it", the band's struggling long-time manager Grant Bartlett told AAP on Tuesday.

"He'll be sorely missed by all the people that knew him".

Mombassa said he would recall his pal and bandmate as "the most wonderful and pleased person I have ever met in my lifestyles". I spoke to him on the cellphone frequently and we would drop around to every other's house now and again. The maximum recent line-up of "the metals" with smith front-and-center performed in southern NSW's Tathra on Saturday night and become scheduled to perform in Melbourne on Thursday. I've never known him to be sick.

"Today is just a bad day". The single reached #3 in the United Kingdom after featuring on the soundtrack of Crocodile Dundee in 1986. Soundtrack to many a great party over so many years!

As well as carving out a legacy as the frontman of Australia's favourite pub circuit band, Smith was an extraordinarily popular television personality.

"Our grief and confusion at this time are little compared to what Andrew's family will be feeling, our hearts and prayers go out to them", they wrote.

Fans have been paying tribute to the musician on social media, with one recalling working with Smith on his 1996 solo album writing: "I don't recall working with a kinder, more giving or more cheerful artist before or since".

Smith's passing comes just three weeks after being inducted into the Australian Songwriters Association Hall of Fame.

Smith is survived by his son Harvey.
