Jaguar announces range-boosting upgrade for I-Pace customers

The Jaguar I-Pace electric auto will soon be upgraded with an extra 20km driving range thanks to technical knowledge gleaned from the I-Pace eTrophy which runs in conjunction with the ABB Formula E racing championship. The new software upgrade doesn't change the official certified range figure as that would involve the I-Pace being retested under WLTP.

The all-electric Jaguar I-Pace has taken out the coveted World Car of the Year Award. In this case, that seems to have happened for i-Pace.

These updates come thanks to lessons that the company has learnt from the i-Pace eTrophy race series. Jaguar developed the software from racing the I-Pace in the I-Pace eTrophy one-make series launched in 2018.

Vehicle Engineering Manager of Jaguar I-Pace, Stephen Boulter said that new software update optimizes the powertrain control systems to improve efficiency and allow drivers to travel even further on a single charge without making any hardware changes.

Other changes introduced by the update include changes to the predictive range calculation algorithm we found little trust in, after driving experiences in several different I-Paces. It will allow Jaguar to improve the vehicle more efficiently and conveniently.

Further changes include refinements to temperature control, with the active radiator vane system closing more frequently to enhance aerodynamic performance. The evolution of the Corvette through generations five to seven is an example of a race program that led to successively better and better road cars, but today I've got an example of a racing program that's actually bringing improvements to cars that already belong to their owners.

Battery Capacity: Updates allow the battery to run to a lower state of charge than previously without affecting driveability, durability or performance.

In addition to the range increase, the eTrophy data-based upgrade will also improve torque distribution to the front and rear motors to deliver more efficient on Eco mode.
