The founder and chairman of Baltimore-based commercial real estate firm St. John Properties rewarded his 198 staff members with $10 million in bonuses at the company's annual holiday party on December 7.

And it was all caught on video.

The bonuses were announced at the company's Christmas party to tears and shock, with the firm saying the extreme bonuses were to celebrate having achieved 20 million square feet of office, retail and warehouse space in eight states.

So when the 198 employees of St John Properties received surprise bonuses averaging US$50,000 ($73,412.80), it was a holiday miracle most didn't see coming. "And we wanted a big way to thank them and I think we were successful in doing that", Mr Maykrantz said.

But six-figure bonuses are in store for some employees - who are set to receive more than $250,000.

The 37-year-old Ms Ridgway - a 14-year employee - said she will use the bonus for her children's college funds.

"I remember opening the envelope, seeing the number, blinking my eyes a couple of times because I thought my vision was off and then hugging my coworkers", said Melissa Alleman, the company's payroll and benefits administrator. "It is life-changing".

"I was totally blown away", said another.

"I believe strongly in giving back to the community by supporting initiatives that make Ludington a wonderful place to live, work and raise a family", FloraCraft owner Lee Schoenherr said. Sure, the St. John bonus is one zero less, but it's fair to say it still beats that Starbucks gift card.
