Six bodies were recovered as of Tuesday morning after a bus fell into a hole caused by a road cave-in in northwest China's Qinghai Province on Monday.

Dramatic surveillance footage showed passengers boarding the bus when the collapse happened, swallowing the front of the vehicle, a lamppost and people waiting in line, while others at the bus stop fled for their lives.

Remarkable footage of the incident surfaced on social media, showing the moment the ground gave way beneath the bus as it stopped to pick up passengers in the city of Xining, sending it careening head-first into a large void.

Several people disappeared as the sinkhole spread, including what appeared to be a child.

The 16 injured were taken to hospital and are in a stable condition, Xinhua added, citing a local emergency management official. The incident also triggered an explosion inside the hole, video showed.

Search and rescue work was underway and the cause of the accident was under investigation, the state-run CCTV broadcaster said.

Sinkholes in China are often blamed on construction works and the rapid pace of development in the country.

An enormous sinkhole swallowed passers-by and a public bus in China, reported state media on January 14, injuring fifteen people while another ten are still missing. As they tried to pull her up, however, the road collapsed a second time beneath their feet, plunging everyone into the pit.

A ball of fire and the smoke can be seen bursting out of the huge sinkhole.
