Yet those who've been paying attention to the protest movement in Iran know that it was hitting critical mass before the Soleimani killing and the retaliatory Iranian airstrike against USA bases in Iraq.

Trump also used Farsi to call on the Iranian government "not to kill protesters" and express that it's "totally up to" Iran to start negotiations, as he "couldn't care less" about it.

Iran has signalled that Canada's Transportation Safety Board (TSB) would play a more active role than worldwide rules require in the investigation of the Iranian military's shooting down of a Ukrainian airliner last week, TSB head Kathy Fox said on Monday.

He said when he learned about the downing of the plane, "I wished I was dead". He did not name anyone or say how many had been held.

It said ships contacted by Iranian forces should identify themselves and say that they are proceeding in accordance with global law.

As we reported earlier, the aircraft of Ukraine's Defense Ministry will return from Iran with the bodies of 11 Ukrainians who deceased in the recent plane crash in Tehran.

The disaster and subsequent unrest comes amid one of the biggest escalations between Tehran and Washington since the revolution four decades ago that made them into foes. Iran said it attacked the bases in retaliation for the USA killing of an Iranian general days earlier.

At Tehran's Amirkabir University on Saturday night, thousands of protesters shouted "Khamenei is over!" and called the government "shameless".

Protesters denouncing Iran's clerical rulers took to the streets and riot police deployed to face them on Monday, in a third day of demonstrations after authorities acknowledged mistakenly shooting down a passenger plane. Cracking down on the protesting public - that is also driven by domestic woes - is not going to help the regime. But videos uploaded to the internet showed scores, possibly hundreds, of protesters on Monday at sites in Tehran and Isfahan, a major city south of the capital.

Rouhani stressed that the fact that the Iranian military had admitted to downing the plane was a "good first step".

Maple Leaf Foods chief executive Michael McCain said his colleague's wife and son were among the 57 Canadians who died.

Ukraine's foreign minister said "grieving nations", five of the countries whose citizens were killed when an airliner was shot down, would meet on Thursday. Trudeau said on January 13 in an emotive speech that those people would be safe at home with their families now were it not for the escalating tensions between the United States and Iran. "Innocents bear the brunt of it and it is a reminder why all of us need to work so hard on de-escalation, moving forward to reduce tensions and find a pathway that doesn't involve further conflict and killing".

According to a transcript, Trudeau said Canada did not receive a heads up before the United States killed Soleimani.
