Provincial officials did not say when they had been diagnosed. The death toll in mainland China so far is 2,236.

South Korea is the latest hot spot with 100 new cases taking its total to 204, most in Daegu, a city of 2.5 million, where scores were infected in what authorities called a "super-spreading event" at a church, traced to an infected 61-year-old woman who attended services.

One of the new countries to report cases is Iran, where authorities reported 18 cases on Friday and four deaths, stemming from the city of Qom.

He said it was "very concerning" that Iran had reported 18 cases and 4 deaths in just the past two days, adding that the World Health Organization had supplied testing kits to Tehran.

Hubei, the hard-hit central province where the virus emerged late previous year, said Friday that 271 cases were reported by its prisons on Thursday, including 220 that had previously not been known to provincial authorities.

Its warden was dismissed for failing to prevent the outbreak, local newspaper Hubei Daily reported.

Seven guards and 200 inmates also tested positive for the virus at Rencheng Prison in eastern Shandong Province, the Shandong Provincial Health Committee told a news conference. The state-owned agency was citing information from the Shandong provincial government.

"The implementation of our prevention and control measures have not been effective", said Wu Lei, head of the province's prison administration.

Another 34 cases were found at Shilifeng Prison in Zhejiang Province, leading to the ouster of its director and another official.

Earlier on Thursday, South Korea reported its first death from the new virus.

Two prisons in China have reported almost 250 cases of COVID-19 cases, with both inmates and prison guards getting infected. Two officials were removed from their post in this case, reported the Global Times, another government-owned news outlet.

"All the cases were imported cases".

In an earlier statement, Chinese health authorities said the coronavirus posed more of a risk to the elderly, men and people suffering from diseases.
