Former Minnesota Vikings All-Pro cornerback Xavier Rhodes is signing a one-year deal with the Indianapolis Colts, his agency, Shah Sports Group, told ESPN's Adam Schefter on Thursday. Now they're adding a talented cornerback in Rhodes who, along with Rock Ya-Sin and Malik Hooker, will give the Colts an impressive defensive secondary.

The Colts had a need after cutting Pierre Desir earlier this week. They only had about $28 million in salary-cap space before signing Rhodes and Sheldon Day on Wednesday. ESPN's Jeremy Fowler did tweet that the Vikings attempted to bring back Rhodes but he declined to return.

He is the third defensive player acquired by the Colts this offseason. The Vikings released him, along with defensive tackle Linval Joseph, on March 13.

Rhodes is coming off of a down year with the Minnesota Vikings, the team he has played for his entire career since being drafted No. 25 overall in the 2013 National Football League draft. Rhodes is likely to be listed as a starter right now but if the Colts use one of their second-round picks on a cornerback, the 29-year-old could have some competition for the starting role.

A series of hamstring, foot and groin injuries in 2018 led to a decrease in Rhodes' efficiency. He struggled at times a year ago, and didn't seem to be a favorite of coach Mike Zimmer.

Penalty flags also followed Rhodes throughout his Vikings tenure, which included him either tying or outright leading the team in penalties every year from 2013-2019.

To mitigate issues with the pass defense, Zimmer no longer had Rhodes routinely shadow his opponent's No. 1 receiver and instead deployed a cornerback rotation.
