The number of coronavirus cases in Italy could be 10 times higher than those officially reported, rocketing the total number of infections to over 600,000, Angelo Borelli, head of the country's Civil Protection Agenc said.

Italy has added 683 more dead and 5,210 infections to its coronavirus toll, but its initial steep rise in cases has continued to level off two weeks into a nationwide lockdown.

"The downward trend of people now positive for coronavirus in Italy stops", reads the report.

It said 57,521 people are now infected with COVID-19 in Italy, 3,491 more than Tuesday. There were 3,612 people in intensive care against a previous 3,489.

This cumulative figure comprised 57,521 people who have tested positive so far, and 9,362 people who have recovered and the 7,503 deceased since the pandemic broke out in the northern regions on February 21. Italy last week reported more dead than China and on Wednesday registered a total of 7,503 dead with the virus, confirming its place as the European epicenter of the pandemic.

"We are in a phase of apparent stabilization, and we believe the number of infected people, or new cases, is consistent with the trend that the virus spreading has had in the country", Agostino Miozzo, coordinator of the Civil Protection's scientific-technical committee, told the press conference.

Separately, Piedmont authorities said their death toll had risen by 50 in the last 24 hours.

That compared with 4,474 deaths and 32,346 cases reported up to Wednesday.
