The President's actions come at the request of Governor Greg Abbott, who cited the need for federal assistance "to save lives, to protect property, public health, and safety, and to lessen or avert the threat of COVID-19".

According to a White House press release, the president's action makes federal funding available for crisis counseling for affected people throughout the state.

Trump declared that a major disaster exists in the State of Texas and ordered Federal assistance to supplement State and local recovery efforts in the areas affected by the Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic beginning on January 20, 2020, and continuing.

The move comes a day after Trump declared that a major disaster exists in NY and four other states due to the COVID-19 crisis.

"This request for a major disaster declaration, if approved, will provide the commonwealth additional federal assistance beyond what was included in the emergency declaration I announced on March 13. The disaster declaration also requests FEMA's individual assistance program".

The highest numbers were from Dallas County reporting 169 cases, Harris 134, Travis 98, Tarrant 71, Bexar 69, and Fort Bend 46. Public labs account for 1,758 tests, and private labs have conducted 11,477 tests.
