U.S. wants 1000 troops on Canada border

The border, the world's longest at 5,500 miles, was temporarily shut as of Saturday to all non-essential travelers on both sides, but not cross-border trade.

The prime minister also said he's taking additional measures to prevent a rise in unemployment and poverty in Canada.

The Canadian government says that it will conduct spot checks to verify compliance.

The official also stressed that the decision to deploy the troops had not been made.

"In terms of what we are doing about it, we are very directly and very forcefully expressing. that in Canada's view, this is an entirely unnecessary step which we would view as damaging to our relationship", said Ms. Freeland during Thursday's ministerial briefing on the novel coronavirus, which causes the respiratory illness COVID-19.

The government is urging any worker eligible for EI who loses their job due to COVID-19 to apply now for help. "They should be able to support countries all over the world".

"Public Health will be following up in many, many cases to make sure people are following these rules and enforcement will happen as enforcement does in various ways by our police and enforcement officers".

Canadians who have already applied for EI and whose application has not yet been processed would not need to reapply, the website said.
