The USNS Comfort arrived in New York Harbor on Monday with 1,200 medical staff as well as additional supplies as the demand for medical attention surges in the state.

The Comfort's arrival comes 10 days after MSNBC's Rachel Maddow scoffed at the idea that federal resources would reach New York City at all.

A second hospital ship, the USNS Mercy, accepted its first patients at the Port of Los Angeles in support of the nation's COVID-19 response efforts Sunday. He said one of those ships would be operational in NY harbor next week.

Criticism against Maddow came thick and fast as frustrated viewers tweeted at her, with some including the original video clip.

"This ship represents all that is good about the American people".

President Donald Trump was on hand for the ship's departure ceremony over the weekend from Virginia.

The hospital ship will help lighten the burden on New York City's medical community by treating patients who don't have coronavirus aboard the ship.

Its arrival came as Virginia, Maryland and the capital Washington became the latest areas to restrict citizens' movements, meaning nearly three-quarters of Americans are now living, or about to live, under various phases of lockdown. This will allow local health professionals to focus on treating COVID-19 patients and for shore-based hospitals to use their intensive care units and ventilators for those patients.

"The entire Comfort team safely, efficiently and effectively completed their maintenance availability, readied the hospital for patients, moved aboard and readied the ship for operations in minimal time", said Capt. Joseph O'Brien, commodore of Amphibious Squadron Six and the Task Force New York City mission commander.

"The president said when he announced those ships would be put into action against the COVID-19 epidemic".

In a news conference at its arrival in the city, Gov. Cuomo said the ship will act as a "relief valve for hospitals that are struggling now, that are over capacity all over this city".

'Don't fight today's fight. Plan for two weeks, three weeks, four weeks from now when you're going to have the apex, and make sure that we're in a position to win the battle, ' he added.
