This evening's event was broadened from the original thank-you to NHS staff, to include all key workers who are helping out in the front line of the battle against coronavirus.

Annemarie Plas, the creator of the #ClapforourCarers movement in the United Kingdom, said: "I am really delighted that ITV is backing the initiative to clap for all who there are out there taking care of us, and helping keep that Thursday 8pm moment alive".

Following the first event, many posted videos on social media to praise health workers, in an inspiring show of appreciation.

Last week cheers, vehicle horns, clapping and the banging of pots and pans could be heard around towns and villages, as young and old joined together to say thank you to those working tirelessly to look after our loved ones.

As everyone followed Government guidelines and remained inside to help our NHS, it provided a flawless opportunity for neighbours to stand in solidarity with healthcare workers, albeit from the safe distance of their own doors.

The Clap For Carers campaign, which started online, was staged because "during these unprecedented times they need to know we are grateful", according to the organisers.
