Like most films, the "Avatar" sequels had to halt production in March due to the coronavirus pandemic.

New Zealand has pretty much stamped out COVID-19, so productions such as Avatar 2 and The Lord of the Rings are able to safely resume shooting in the coming weeks.

Avatar 2 is aiming for a December 27, 2021 release, and three more sequels are set to quickly follow in December 2023, December 2025, and December 2027.

According to the New Zealand Film Commission, every production in the country will now be required to complete a registration with portal ScreenSafe in order to help the Ministry of Health with contact tracing and WorkSafe with monitoring.

"Our "Avatar" sets are ready - and we couldn't be more excited to be headed back to New Zealand next week", Landau wrote, also sharing a photo of two water vessels used in the films.

Franchise What is the "Avatar" series all about?

Released in 2009, the movie collected a whopping $2.79 billion at worldwide box office.

It looks pretty fancy, but it's an Avatar film - what were we expecting?

Others who have joined the cast include Kate Winslet, Michelle Yeoh, and Cliff Curtis. "The world is bigger than the first one, but essentially, it's a movie about family", Worthington said.

Director James Cameron, who splits his time between California and his Wairarapa home, told Empire magazine earlier this month that he was hopeful Avatar 2 would still meet its scheduled release for December 2021. It is yet to be known if the makers will stick to that date or postpone release.

Filming for Avatar has been on pause, but visual production work has been still underway in Manhattan Beach, California.
