Earth's Magnetic Field Weakens on an Expanded Area, Scientists Say

The satellites are explicitly created to detect and measure the different magnetic signals that causing Earth's magnetic field, allowing experts to spot vulnerable areas.

There's a large region where magnetic intensity has been reduced, and it's been observed between Africa and South America, and it's called the South Atlantic Anomaly.

The complex molten core of the Earth generates our impressive magnetic field.

As per the reports, the magnetic field around the earth, on an average, has lost nearly 10% of its strength over the last two centuries.

Over the last 50 years the intensity of the magnetic field in this area decreased from 24 000 to 22 000 nanotesla. Armed with data from the ESA's Swarm satellite, scientists might finally know why: the shifting of our magnetic field north pole is caused by a titanic struggle between two competing massive magnetic plumes.

"The new, eastern minimum of the South Atlantic Anomaly has appeared over the last decade and in recent years is developing vigorously", Jürgen Matzka, of the GFZ German Research Centre for Geosciences and the Head of the Geomagnetic Observatory in Niemegk. Well, the geographic North Pole stays fixed over time (mostly because we define it to stay fixed over time) but the magnetic north pole constantly moves. Moving electric charges generate an electric current, and any little changes in that electric current amplify, folding over on themselves and generating a magnetic field - one of the strongest magnetic fields in the solar system, capable of puncturing the surface of the Earth itself and extending thousands of miles into space.

However, the team found that a center of limited strength has developed southwest of Africa in just the last five years. Researchers believe that this could mean that the anomaly can split into two separate cells. "The challenge now is to understand the processes in Earth's core driving these changes".

This flip doesn't happen immediately, but instead would occur over the course of a couple of centuries during which there would be multiple north and south magnetic poles all around the globe.

The anomaly is wreaking havoc on satellites and more spacecraft that's flying through the area - all these have been experiencing technical malfunctions. This event has occurred few times in the history of our planet, as per the scientists and we are long overdue by the average rate at which these reversals take place (roughly every 250,000 years).
