North American stock markets down in late-morning trading, loonie lower

Canada's main stock index edged higher in early trading, as gains in the materials sector outweighed losses in the financial and energy sectors.

The S&P/TSX composite index was down 19.81 points at 14,865.04.

At 5.57am ET, Dow e-minis were down 139 points, or 0.57%, S&P 500 e-minis were down 16.5 points, or 0.56%, and Nasdaq 100 e-minis were down 65.5 points, or 0.71%. The S&P 500 index was up 6.94 points at 2,955.45, while the Nasdaq composite was up 39.71 points at 9,324.59.

The July crude contract was down US$1.26 at US$32.66 per barrel and the July natural gas contract was up a little over a penny at almost US$1.87 per mmBTU.

The June gold contract was up US$13.60 at US$1,735.50 an ounce and the July copper contract was down 4.55 cents at almost US$2.39 a pound.
