North Korea discussed new policies for increasing its "nuclear war deterrence" during a military meeting presided over by leader Kim Jong-un, state news agency KCNA reported on Sunday.

The newspaper, the organ of the North's ruling party, said: "In realistic terms, a person can not suddenly disappear and reappear by folding space". The country has long credited its leaders as possessing this ability, as one of many myths that have been used by North Korea to deify its leaders. A South Korean official told Yonhap News the development was "noteworthy" and said "it appears to stress patriotism and love for the people rather than mystification of the leaders".

Since North Korean leader Kim Jong-un failed to reach an agreement in its second summit with U.S. President Donald Trump in Hanoi past year, he has focused on showing more of his "human" side, urging its people to stay away from the mystification of their leader.

US-led negotiations aimed at dismantling North Korea's nuclear and missile programmes have made little progress since late a year ago, especially after a global battle on the coronavirus began.

He added: "Absolute loyalty would spring up when (they) are mesmerised by the leader humanly and comradely".

Earlier this month, Kim made his first public appearance since rumours began circulating of his death. "We will further analyze its implications", the official said.
