Major League Baseball says 2020 season now in jeopardy as labor battle intensifies

Manfred told ESPN on Monday that "I'm not confident" there will be baseball this season, blaming the lack of dialogue between the two sides. "I think there's real risk; and as long as there's no dialog, that real risk is going to continue".

The March agreement gives Manfred the right to cancel the season in its entirety, and several reports say the league has threatened to do just that unless the union backs down from its threat to sue.

Manfred said the MLBPA's "decision to end good-faith negotiations" and the need for an agreement with the union on health and safety protocols "were really negative in terms of our efforts".

"The owners are 100% committed to getting baseball back on the field", Manfred said.

As Reds pitcher Trevor Bauer broke down in a Monday Twitter thread, Major League Baseball players feel that the owners have been negotiating in bad faith as a stalling tactic to force a 48-or-50-game season. "Unfortunately, I can't tell you that I'm a hundred percent certain that's gonna happen".

In his first tweet since May, Trout - who rarely speaks out about, well, anything - commented on the statement from MLBPA director Tony Clark. The players have instead opted to have the owners institute the season in lieu of negotiating further - hence, the "tell us when and where" message - but now, Manfred and Major League Baseball ownership continues to stall in hopes of minimizing the games played (a money-saving effort).

Manfred said he believes the union meant to file a grievance that the league had not fulfilled its obligation under the March 26 agreement to play the most games possible, which he deemed a "bad-faith tactic". Manfred is now walking back those comments, calling the public tussle between owners and players "a disaster for our game".

Manfred was one of six professional sports commissioners to be interviewed for the special, which will air Monday at 9 p.m. ET on ESPN.
