For weeks, massive crowds in St. Louis - like those in cities across the United States - have rallied against police brutality and racial injustice following the death of George Floyd in Minneapolis last month.

About 500 protesters marched past the home on Sunday to reach the residence of Mayor Lyda Krewson. During a live-stream Q&A on Facebook on Friday, she turned to a crumpled stack of those letters and began reading them one by one. "To alleviate community relations we demand that Mayor Krewson resign from office and a special election be held to replace her". Krewson has been facing resignation demands after recently doxxing residents for writing letters asking to defund the police, and the march Sunday evening was to end at her home to re-up that request. An email and phone call from the Associated Press to police were not immediately answered.

She was elected as St. Louis' first female mayor in 2017 after vowing to reduce crime and improve impoverished neighbourhoods in the city. Another called it "a move created to silence dissent".

Video of a couple brandishing firearms at nearby Black Lives Matter protestors outside their St. Louis mansion has gone viral.

Krewson then read the person's name and the street they lived on, adding the person "wants no police - no money going to police".

But her apology was not enough to quell the demonstrations. An online petition calling for her resignation had more than 43,000 signatures by Monday morning.

"As a leader, you don't do stuff like's only right that we visit her at her home", said Democrat state Representative Rasheen Aldridge, speaking into a megaphone at the protest Sunday. We were told that we would be killed, our home burned and our dog killed. They chanted "keep moving" to keep each other from being derailed by the armed couple.
