Super moon graces night sky across the globe

"A supermoon is a full moon where the moon is just a little bit closer to Earth than usual, so it looks a little bit bigger and a little bit brighter", Brown said.

This supermoon got its name because the April full moon often corresponds with the blooming of pink flowers in eastern North America.

"Watch for the biggest full moon of the year to shine all night long as it beams in the east after sunset April 7, climbs highest up for the night around midnight, and sets in the west around sunrise April 8", EarthSky's Bruce McClure said.

The moon will be full only on Tuesday night, but will be large enough on Monday and Wednesday to still merit a look, Delaney said.

But for everyone else, the moon will appear larger and brighter than normal tonight and over the next couple of days. It will occur when the moon is within 90% of perigee, which is its closest approach to Earth in orbit.

The April full moon may also be called the sprouting grass moon, the egg moon and the fish moon.

Due to the optical effect known as the moon illusion, the full moon can seem huge when rising behind distant objects on the horizon. The lunar perigee, which is the point at which the Moon is closest to Earth in its orbit, is at 221,773 miles and will occur just hours before the full moon comes into view.

"The most basic of the astronomical lessons you can do with a little one is the phases of the moon", she said. Here's when you can see them.

Why is it called a "pink" supermoon?

"But our Moon isn't even close, so yeah, every month".

This dazzling moon gets its name from the moss-pink flowers that bloom in the northern hemisphere during the early spring.

Some fall moons are named for harvest seasons, for example.
