Carl Bernstein (yes, that Carl Bernstein) has a lengthy and deeply reported piece for CNN detailing Trump's phone interactions with other heads of states (From pandering to Putin to abusing allies and ignoring his own advisers, Trump's phone calls alarm USA officials). To other global leaders, including key US allies, he was allegedly flat-out abusive.

In hundreds of highly classified phone calls with foreign heads of state, President Donald Trump was so consistently unprepared for discussion of serious issues, so often outplayed in his conversations with powerful leaders like Russian President Vladimir Putin and Turkish President Recep Erdogan, and so abusive to leaders of America's principal allies, that the calls helped convince some senior U.S. officials - including his former secretaries of state and defense, two national security advisers and his longest-serving chief of staff - that the President himself posed a danger to the national security of the United States, according to White House and intelligence officials intimately familiar with the contents of the conversations.

CNN has a lengthy, deeply reported piece on Trump's phone calls to other heads of state.

His conversations with former British Prime Minister Theresa May were described as "humiliating and bullying".

Trump took the most calls from Turkey's Erdogan, CNN reports, at times taking two calls a week to a direct line. "He's toughest (in the phone calls) with those he looks at as weaklings and weakest with the ones he ought to be tough with".

For the more seasoned Merkel, Trump's barbs were "water off a duck's back" and she would come back at him with facts and hard evidence to back her view on matters such as cooperation between Germany and the U.S.

"But May was taken aback by Trump's hostile tone and would get "flustered and nervous" when Trump attacked her", according to a source.

"He clearly intimidated her and meant to", the source told Bernstein.

A German official confirmed to CNN that he behaved the same way in person towards female leaders. At various turns, the calls saw him unprepared or worse outfoxed by the likes of presidents Vladimir Putin of Russian Federation and Recep Erdogan of Turkey.

Putin "just outplays" Trump during their one-on-one interactions, according to CNN's report.

In its reporting, CNN cited "White House and intelligence officials intimately familiar with the contents of the conversations" as its sources for the background on the calls. "From negotiating the phase one China deal and the USMCA to North Atlantic Treaty Organisation allies contributing more and defeating ISIS, President Trump has shown his ability to advance America's strategic interests".
