European Central Bank begins preparations for county cricket’s August return

The opening round of the first-class County Championship was originally scheduled to begin on April 12.

Meanwhile, the European Central Bank has set up a working group dedicated to the domestic game's return.

The ECB's clear-cut intention to stage some form of domestic women's cricket will offer renewed hope for female domestic cricketers in England, many of whom have been hit hard by the pandemic.

With players mostly being in lockdown from the last three months, they are expected to resume training on or after July 1.

The Women's Super League level of competition was finished previous summer season, but Harrison insisted the board's determination for their domestic video game - which is now based all over 8 regional hubs - was "unwavering".

ECB Chief Executive Officer, Tom Harrison, said the following in a statement, "It is a significant step for our game that we are able to approve the start of the men's domestic season for 1 August and one which will be welcomed by everyone connected with County Cricket".

He extra: "It follows comprehensive consultation in between the 18 initial-class counties, the Experienced Cricketers' Affiliation and European Central Bank and has only been achievable thanks to the significant really hard do the job that proceeds to happen as we prepare for a domestic year contrary to any the sport has faced prior to".

"We have pushed for an "opt in" process with European Central Bank and the counties so players can totally understand the protocols in place to mitigate risks and those who are not yet able to return feel comfortable in not opting in".

Preparation and planning for the start of the new season remains subject to ongoing health advice from government, with the safety of players, staff and officials the number one priority.

Harrison ongoing: "Our potent choice is that the women's new elite domestic composition starts off this summer months and we will operate hard to be certain that transpires".

A women's domestic cricket competition will also be held, although the format and start date has yet to be decided.

Plans as to how county cricket will be structured have yet to be agreed upon, however, the formats are to be discussed in early July with a schedule to be announced shortly after.
