The Vancouver Canadians announced Tuesday that the 2020 Northwest League season has been cancelled due to challenges stemming from the COVID-19 pandemic.

The National Association of Professional Baseball Leagues, the minor league governing body, made the long-expected announcement. Major league teams are going to extraordinary lengths in an attempt to ensure the safety of players and personnel involved with the sport, and those kinds of resources are not available to minor league clubs.

In Augusta, the GreenJackets sent out a news release via Twitter to discuss the end of the season.

Adding to the likelihood of a cancellation: at this point, to even have a season, Minor. The Emeralds, along with all of professional baseball, will remain united and optimistic because baseball will return.

"We would also like to sincerely thank our partners, season seat members, fans, and the community for all of the incredible support over these past few weeks", Benavides continued. "Additionally, we have already begun planning for our 2021 season and can not wait to invite our wonderful fans back to the ballpark for some baseball". The major league model for this year of playing in empty parks would not work for minor league owners.
