Although the USA continues to report spikes in cases across the country, American Airlines announced that it will begin booking flights to full capacity again starting this week.

The airline will resume round-trip flight services on the air route between San Francisco and Shanghai Pudong International Airport starting July 8, according to the airline. In the past few months American and most other airlines have blocked off all or some of the middle seats in Economy but that will stop on Wednesday.

Delta, however, has said it will cap flights at until at least the September 30, blocking middle seats in economy and every other seat in first class.

"We don't think it's the right message", Redfield said. Sanders, an independent from Vermont, pressed the officials on how full flights square with the message from public health experts that people should stay six feet apart to prevent transmission of the virus that causes COVID-19. Those who are not nostalgic for the pre-COVID travel norms can move to less crowded flights if they are available and don't cost more.

The company said it knows "customers are placing their trust in us to make every aspect of their journey safe, and we are committed to doing just that".

Senator Bernie Sanders wants the CDC to tell airlines that filling planes is "unacceptable behavior - they are endangering the lives of the American people".

During a hearing of the Committee on Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions, Sanders criticized the airline, asking National Institute Of Allergy And Infectious Diseases Director Anthony Fauci and CDC Director Robert Redfield whether packed planes or buses were an inherent safety risk.

USA airlines recently stepped up enforcement of mask wearing on flights. Masks will continue to be required for passengers and American Airlines crews.

They urged government-administered temperature checks during the airport screening process, but the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) said on Tuesday that no decision has been made.
