"Any recommendation on a pathway toward a safe return to sport will depend on the national trajectory of COVID-19 spread", said Brian Hainline, the NCAA's chief medical officer.

Fall sports are very much in question due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Earlier in the day, the American Athletic Conference announced it would require all its schools to test football players for COVID-19 at least 72 hours before competition, and the Power Five conferences are expected to require the same from their schools.

A lack of ability to isolate new positive cases or quarantine high contact risk cases on campus.

Here's a statement from NCAA President Mark Emmert: "When we made the extremely hard decision to cancel last spring's championships, it was because there was simply no way to conduct them safely".

Testing and results within 72 hours of competition in high contact risk sports.

We're less than two months away from the supposed start of the 2020 college football season, however as the global health conundrum reveals no signs of decreasing- and rather is intensifying in regards to cases in particular areas throughout the country- it remains to be seen whether college sports can feasibly have a season this year.

"With the data accessible to us today in regards to the proceeded with spread of the infection, we essentially don't accept we can make and keep up a domain for intercollegiate athletic rivalry that meets our prerequisites for security and worthy degrees of hazard, reliable with the arrangements that every one of our schools is embracing as a major aspect of its reviving plans this fall", peruses the letter.

College athletics programs the nation over have taken a wide scope of activities to address the coronavirus pandemic.

The Big Ten Conference says it will play a conference-only schedule this season, including football.

The Big East joined those leagues Thursday by going conference-only for the fall season, which for the basketball-focused league includes men's and women's soccer, men's and women's cross-country, volleyball and field hockey.

Meanwhile, the Mid-Eastern Atlantic Conference on Thursday became the third Division I conference to say it will not have a fall sports season.

Power 5 programs, including IN, have been testing athletes as they return to campus for voluntary offseason workouts. Many sports require close, personal contact and require specially crafted guidelines.

"So nothing that occurs to the student athlete is in a silo", said Dr. Chris Kratochvil, executive director of the Global Center for Health Security at University of Nebraska Medical Center.

Kratochvil, who heads the Big Ten's Task Force for Emerging Infectious Diseases, said the availability of tests and how quickly results can be delivered, the availability of personal protective equipment used by healthcare workers and the stress on hospitals will all be considered when determining whether college sports can be played.
