Australian city to make mask-wearing compulsory

Residents in metropolitan Melbourne are subject to stay-at-home orders and can only leave home for essential work, study, exercise or care responsibilities.

"As I said we continue to be concerned about the number of our rates that we have across aged care facilities in Victoria, they have been to date concentrated in Melbourne, but now having facilities in regional communities as well is concerning, and just highlights the fact that all Victorians need to be vigilant about this highly contagious virus", Professor Sutton said.

Melbournians not wearing face coverings will be fined A$200 (US$140), said Victoria Premier Daniel Andrews.

People in Melbourne must now wear masks when leaving their homes as Victoria, Australia's second most-populous state, marked two weeks of triple-digit increases in new coronavirus infections today.

Andrews said that after hitting a daily high of 428 cases on Friday, the drop in cases to 217 on Saturday does not mean that the danger has passed.

Victoria state, which includes Melbourne, now has almost 3,000 active cases of COVID-19 after a further 363 infections were reported Sunday despite a 10-day lockdown. Below the age of 12, it's a consideration.

"These won't always be really easy and they won't always be welcome, but they are important, and there are lessons, increasingly internationally, that the jurisdictions that are doing well have introduced mandatory mask wearing", he said.

"But it does make a difference".

"We don't want to get to those steps, if we have to, we will, but the next step in our fight against this virus is for everybody to be wearing masks when they're out for those four permitted reasons". It does need to cover the nose and mouth, and as some of you might have seen, masks don't do very well in your pocket. It's a cloth face covering. They don't do very well when sitting on your chin. "But only if you need to".

All Victorian aged care workers will be required to wear face masks to protect vulnerable senior citizens. For the rest of the time Victorians should.

Three more people died from the disease overnight.
