"These findings have important implications for care and monitoring of people who are most vulnerable to severe Covid-19", said Dr Claire Steves from KCL.

Patients also experienced a wide variety of other symptoms including muscle pain, chills, fatigue and headache.

According to the study, symptoms go beyond the common consistent cough, fever and loss of smell.

These results are maybe not generalizable, since testing was restricted to certain patients during this period period and hospitalized patients are likely overrepresented in the sample of people surveyed, but the data does give doctors an improved sense of who may need to be tested or even isolated to slow the spread of the Covid-19 pandemic.

This prediction tool could provide an early warning on who is likely to need intensive care based on their early symptoms.

The study noted that patient symptoms can fall under one of the six following categories: "flu-like" with no fever, "flu-like" with fever, gastrointestinal, severe level one with fatigue, severe level two with confusion, and severe level three accompanied by abdominal and respiratory pain.

2 "Flu-like" with fever: Headache, loss of smell, cough, sore throat, hoarseness, fever, loss of appetite.

1 "Flu-like" with no fever: Headache, loss of smell, muscle pains, cough, sore throat, chest pain, no fever.

For clusters four, five, and six, the researchers said these figures were 8.6, 9.9, and 19.8 per cent respectively.

Approximately half of cluster six required hospitalisation, in comparison to 16% of the first cluster.

A computer image created by Nexu Science Communication together with Trinity College in Dublin, shows a model structurally representative of a betacoronavirus which is the type of virus linked to COVID-19, better known as the coronavirus linked to the Wuhan outbreak, shared with Reuters on February 18, 2020.

The findings, derived from KCL's symptom tracker app, used data from 1,600 users in the United Kingdom and USA who have had confirmed Covid-19.
