Australia's Victoria state reports 275 new cases of coronavirus

Out of the total new cases, 327 remain under investigation, while three more deaths reported overnight taking the state's toll to 38.

Victoria, which has forced almost 5 million people into a partial six-week lockdown on July 9, reported 363 new cases of the coronavirus on Sunday, after 217 cases the previous day.

The casualties concern two men and a woman in their nineties.

People living in metropolitan Melbourne and Mitchell Shire will now be required to wear a face covering when leaving home for one of the four reasons, following a concerning increase in coronavirus cases in recent days.

"I understand this is a big shift and that not being able to see each other's faces might be confronting".

About 60 people in Sydney face a fine of $1,000 each after attending a party Saturday night and breaking the public health guidelines of no more than 20 visitors to a home, police said.

To give people time to purchase or make a face covering, this new rule won't be enforced until after 11.59pm on Wednesday 22 July - but for those who can, please start wearing yours immediately.

"By covering our faces, we're protecting ourselves, our families and every single Victorian".

But there are some reasons for not wearing a masks such as medical reasons, children aged under 12, a professional reason or if not practical - like running - but individuals need to carry a mask with them. "It can be a scarf, it can be a homemade mask".

"There's no vaccine to this wildly infectious virus", he said.

"We're going to be wearing masks in Victoria and potentially in other parts of the country for a very long time", Andrews told a televised briefing.

In regional Victoria, the advice for face coverings remains at a recommendation level for situations where social distancing is not possible.

FEDERAL Member for Nicholls Damian Drum is calling on Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews to enact a serious and genuine lockdown around Greater Melbourne and the Mitchell Shire.

The Government will work closely with hospitals and care providers in the coming days to ensure these changes are made in a careful and sensitive way to support the needs of patients and residents.

Victoria now has a total of 5942 cases since the pandemic began, 2913 of those active.
