A Japanese H-IIA rocket carrying a United Arab Emirates Mars spacecraft has been placed on the launch pad for Monday's scheduled liftoff for the Arab world's first interplanetary mission, officials said Sunday.

It blasted off from the Tanegashima Space Center on a small southern Japanese island aboard a Mitsubishi Heavy Industries' H-IIA rocket, on time at 6:58 a.m. (2158 GMT Sunday) into the blue sky.

The launch, initially planned for July 15, had been delayed for five days due to bad weather.

Why it matters: This mission, which launched on an H2-A rocket from Japan, marks the UAE's first mission to Mars. The spacecraft contracted controllers shortly after separation.

This June 1, 2020, file rendering provided by Mohammed Bin Rashid Space Centre shows the Hope probe.

A newcomer in space development, the UAE has so far successfully launched three observation satellites, but has not gone beyond the Earth's orbit.

Scientists want to know what Mars was like billions of many years in the past, again when it had water resources that may well have supported tiny lifestyle varieties prior to turning into the frozen entire world it is right now.

The timelines for such missions are complicated and the nations concerned are striving to get very best advantage of a a person-thirty day period window in which Mars and Earth are in suitable alignment on the same facet of the sun, minimizing travel time and gas use.

The Hope spacecraft, along with its launch, cost $200 million, according to Omran Sharaf, the UAE project manager.

The Tianwen-1 mission will be the first practical launch of the Long March-5 series rocket, China's largest carrier rocket. Those universities collaborated on the spacecraft and its instruments.

That partnership included building and testing Hope at LASP's facilities in Colorado.

"Hope will capture the ebbs and flows of weather on Mars to a degree that wasn't possible before", said Daniel Baker, director of LASP, in a statement. "It's a showcase for how space exploration has become an increasingly global endeavor". The space agency has planned three missions to our neighboring red planet.

The final launch date of China's Mars probe mission will be determined by environmental elements which includes climate ailments, the distance between Earth to Mars and the start center's general situation, as nicely as a little but more decisive variable, the technical readiness inspection prior to launch, Wang Ya'nan, chief editor of the Aerospace Knowledge journal, advised the World-wide Instances on Friday.

The United Arab Emirates says its "Amal" space probe functioning after launch as it heads toward Mars.
