"As he poignantly once said, "When we see something that's not right, or not just, we have a moral obligation to speak up and speak out to do something about it.' He will be long remembered by the people of Louisiana and across the world".

Tributes to Lewis, who endured numerous beatings and arrests in his lifelong fight against segregation and for racial justice, poured in on Saturday.

"That's the way to do it", Clyburn told CNN's State of the Union, discussing the death of the Atlanta congressman on Friday night, from pancreatic cancer at the age of 80, and his legacy in American public life.

In Alabama, where Lewis was savagely beaten during the "Bloody Sunday" march across the Edmund Pettus Bridge in 1965, he was hailed a "beloved Civil Rights leader" by the current governor, Kay Ivey, successor to segregationist George Wallace who oversaw the police attack.

Fox News Congressional correspondent Chad Pergram pays tribute to U.S. Rep. John Lewis, one of the nation's most preeminent civil rights figures, on 'CAVUTO Live'. "Melania and I send our prayers to he and his family".

Lewis and Trump tangled in January 2017, shortly before the inauguration, when he said he did not view Trump as a "legitimate" president because of Russian meddling in the 2016 election to boost his candidacy.

"Congressman John Lewis should spend more time on fixing and helping his district, which is in disgusting shape and falling apart (not to mention crime infested) rather than falsely complaining about the election results", Trump tweeted, mischaracterizing the congressman's Atlanta-area district. All talk, talk talk - no action of results. All of us were humbled to call Congressman Lewis a colleague, and are heartbroken by his passing.

McConnell said in a statement, "You did not have to agree with John on many policy details to be awed by his life, admire his dedication to his neighbors in Georgia's Fifth District, or appreciate his generous, respectful and friendly bearing". "You knew you were serving amongst someone who was a legend, who was a giant".

U.S. presidential candidate Joe Biden, meanwhile, described Lewis as "truly one-of-a-kind, a moral compass". "How could someone in flesh and blood be so courageous, so full of hope and love in the face of so much hate, violence, and vengeance?"

Clyburn argued on Sunday that the bill the House passed in December is laid out the way the Supreme Court "asked us to" in its 2013 Shelby County v. Holder decision that invalidated a key portion of the Voting Rights Act of 1965.

"His courage helped transform this country". French President Emmanuel Macron said, "A lifetime of struggle for civil rights. It now falls on us to pick it up and march on".
