Both Mark Anderl, 63, a defense attorney and former Essex County assistant prosecutor, and Daniel Anderl, 20, were shot by the attacker.

The husband and son of federal judge Esther Salas were shot at their home in New Jersey yesterday, media reported.

A judiciary official who wasn't authorized to comment and spoke anonymously to the AP says a gunman posed as a delivery driver.

Judge Salas had received threats in the past, the sources said.

The perpetrator, believed to be a lone gunman, was not in custody, the official said.

Both the US Marshals and FBI are investigating the shooting. She was confirmed by the Senate in 2011.

The judge's son was killed, while the husband is in critical condition, the reports said.

Her highest-profile case in recent years was the financial fraud case involving husband-and-wife "Real Housewives of New Jersey" reality TV stars Teresa and Joe Giudice, whom Salas sentenced to prison for crimes including bankruptcy fraud and tax evasion. Salas later sentenced the man to 45 years in prison.

"I know Judge Salas and her husband well, and was proud to recommend her to President Obama for nomination to New Jersey's federal bench", New Jersey Sen.

Governor Phil Murphy called the shooting a "senseless act".
