Bahamas bracing for Hurricane Isaias

This track could shift along with the intensity of the storm, so we will continue to monitor the forecast guidance through the weekend for the very latest.

"Hurricane Isaias is a serious storm, and current predictions indicate that it may impact parts of Virginia as early as this weekend", Governor Northam said.

As of the 8AM update on Friday, the track of Isaias hugs the eastern coast of Florida as well as most of the USA east coast as a Category 1 before sliding into southern New England with tropical storm strength Tuesday and Wednesday.

Isaias is a Category 1 hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson Wind Scale with maximum sustained winds of 85 miles per hour (135 km/h), with higher gusts. But the storm is forecast to strengthen Friday night - and it's expected to remain a hurricane for several days as it plows along the southeastern US coast.

Southeast were bracing Friday night as Hurricane Isaias approached - expecting it to impact the region this weekend and early next week.

The Hurricane Watch Net (HWN) activated on 14.325 MHz on July 31 at 1500 UTC as Hurricane Isaias [pronounced: ees-ah-EE-ahs] heads toward the USA on an uncertain trajectory. The storm is now bringing risky rains to the Bahamas.

"Tropical storm conditions are possible along portions of the Florida east coast beginning Saturday, and a tropical storm watch remains in effect".

Isaias was expected to produce 4 to 8 inches (10 to 20 centimetres) of rain in the Bahamas and the Turks and Caicos Islands. There are no coastal watches or warnings in effect.

The NHC is warning of a unsafe storm surge with water levels rising by as much as three to five feet above normal tide levels in areas of onshore winds in the Bahamas.

The NHC is predicting a general north westward motion with some decrease in forward speed for the day or so followed by a turn toward the north-northwest. "This rain could result in isolated flash and urban flooding, especially in low-lying and poorly drained areas, as well as isolated minor river flooding".

Primary evacuation options should be with friends, family, or hotels or motels outside of Evacuation Zones A and B. If there is an evacuation order, the county will open a shelter at Rymfire Elementary School for people who aren't able to make other arrangements. And if someone has COVID-19 symptoms, those people would be isolated in a shelter and then moved to a non-congregate shelter.

DeSantis said the state's department of health, based on recently issued guidance from the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, would now suggest employers focus on symptomatic people, rather than screening all workers.

But he urged people to have seven days of food, water and medication on hand and said state-run coronavirus testing sites in the areas where the storm could hit would be closed.
