The National Weather Service has issued an Excessive Heat Warning for parts of Arizona, Nevada, and California, including Las Vegas and Phoenix.

The NWS has urged people to take safety precautions like limiting the amount of time spent outdoors.

'Strong high pressure aloft will result in a protracted period of VERY hot temps across the deserts, ' the NWS Phoenix said on Twitter.

USA weather forecasters have issued warnings of a potentially life-threatening heat wave over the weekend in south-western areas of the country.

It comes after a day of record temperatures in the region on Friday.

Needles, California, saw record breaking temperatures as their new high of 121 degrees beat out the old record of 117 degrees set in 1978. Las Vegas is expected to reach 112 on Friday and Saturday, and Phoenix will hit 114 today.

Temperatures in many southwest cities will reach over 110 degrees Fahrenheit this weekend, posing key health risks.

The NWS is asking residents to stay safe by keeping hydrated and avoiding outdoor activities. People with certain medical conditions, the elderly, and those without access to air conditioning are at particular risk.

Forecasters said a high-pressure system was moving through the south-west and causing temperatures to rise.
