Lewis Hamilton managed to get his Mercedes on pole position on Saturday, but according to team boss Toto Wolff, Valtteri Bottas was the Mercedes driver who set the pace at Silverstone.

Hamilton had appeared on the back foot after losing control of his W11 in the second stage of qualifying but bounced back when it mattered most with two record-breaking laps in Q3 that would have been enough to beat Valtteri Bottas.

Though Hamilton recovered to register the 91st pole of his career, with Bottas behind him in second and Red Bull's Max Verstappen in third.

"That was less than 24 hours ago, so it feels a bit surreal for me right now, but I like a good challenge and this is certainly one", said the 32-year-old.

Hamilton said: "There is a relatively big gap between us and third place but it doesn't matter".

"This track is just awesome, because with the gusting wind you have a head-wind and tail-wind and cross-wind at different parts of the circuit", he explained.

"I made some changes going into qualifying and it was worse".

But team-mate Sebastian Vettel's struggle from practice continued on into qualifying, with the four-time champion only 10th. "It's like juggling balls whilst you're on a moving plate and at high speed!"

'I was down in the first sector, too, so I don't know how but I managed to compose myself for Q3.

Lewis Hamilton pulls a rabbit out of the hat to shave the best seven tenths of a second off Valtteri Bottas' lap record and show why he's the king of Silverstone. "It never gets old". "Obviously Lewis found a more than me and ultimately did a really good job and he deserves the pole".

"I'm happy with eighth place today, especially in quite tricky conditions", Ricciardo said afterwards.

"I was one of the first ones to support and to push that we take the knee and I'm still hopeful that one day we will get 20 drivers to take the knee on the grid and that it will happen at one point".
