Hurricane Isaias lashes Bahamas on way to coronavirus-hit Florida

The hurricane was expected to hit North Carolina on Monday, Gov. Roy Cooper told reporters at news conference Friday. Meanwhile, officials in the Bahamas cleared people out of Abaco island who have been living in temporary structures since Dorian devastated the area, killing at least 70 people.

Isaias was carrying top sustained winds of 85 miles per hour (135 kph) and was located about 115 (185 km) south-southeast of the Bahamas capital Nassau at 2 a.m. (06:00 GMT), heading northwest, the National Hurricane Center said.

After hitting Florida, Hurricane Isaias is forecast to travel up the entire US East Coast late this weekend into the middle of next week.

The area could see Tropical Storm Force winds as early as early Tuesday morning.

A Tropical Storm Warning is in effect for North of Ocean Reef to south of Boca Raton Florida, Lake Okeechobee, and the Volusia/Flagler County Line to Ponte Vedra Beach Florida The Hurricane Watch from Hallandale Beach to south of Boca Raton Florida has been discontinued. The storm is now expected to reach the Northeast region as a tropical storm Tuesday into Wednesday.

"The division created new and detailed shelter guidance for all counties in light of COVID-19 and has prepared shelter kits with hand sanitizer, masks and gloves ready to be deployed upon request", DeSantis said. The space agency was monitoring whether the SpaceX Crew Dragon could safely bring its two astronauts back from the International Space Station for a splashdown Sunday in the Gulf of Mexico.

Ron DeSantis declared a state of emergency Friday for all of the state's counties along the Atlantic coast. In Puerto Rico, the National Guard rescued at least 35 people from floodwaters that swept away one woman, whose body was recovered Saturday.

Natalie Betancur, stocking up at a grocery in Palm Beach Gardens, said that the storm itself doesn't cause her great concern.

Scores of hotel rooms along Florida's east coast have been set aside for any people with COVID-19 who are ordered to evacuate their homes where they have been isolating themselves, the governor said.

In addition to personal protective equipment, the state purchased 50 additional generators in case of power outages.
