Minnesota among 34 states affected by salmonella outbreak linked to red onions

Health authorities are warning consumers in Central and Western Canada to avoid eating red onions imported from the US that have been linked to a salmonella outbreak. One death was reported in Oklahoma. The person from P.E.I. had travelled to Alberta, and it's thought he or she caught the illness there. The other strain has been linked to poultry raised in backyards of homes.

Salmonella cases began occurring on June 19, with the most cases appearing in OR with 71, followed by 61 in Utah, 49 in California, 33 in Montana, and 23 in MI.

The Public Health Agency of Canada says it's working with its USA counterparts to investigate an outbreak of salmonella infections across five provinces.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, this outbreak is likely linked to red onions. Within a day of the announcement that red onions were the culprit, Sysco issued a recall.
