MTV's VMAs to honor coronavirus shutdown music

"I hope you all will celebrate yourselves in this moment, everyone should be nominated for an award right now".

Pop stars Ariana Grande and Lady Gaga led a girl power list of nominations on Thursday for the MTV Video Music Awards, which added two new categories to reflect how musicians are responding to the coronavirus pandemic.

"R&B duo Chloe x Halle, who've promoted their brand new album throughout the pandemic with remarkable live performances mainly put on within their own tennis court and out their new house, are nominated for optimal quarantine functionality for" Can It" out of MTV's virtual prom" Prom-athon".

Her song Rain On Me was nominated in three prominent visual categories: Best Cinematography, Best Visual Effects, and Best Choreography.

Coming up behind Grande and Gaga are The Weeknd and Billie Eilish, at six nominations each.

Grande and Gaga got nine nominations each, mostly from their dancey collaboration Rain on Me whose nods included best video, song and collaboration of the year.

The VMAs will air live on 30 August from the Barclays Center in Brooklyn and New York Governor Andrew Cuomo said last month "the event will follow all safety guidelines, including limited or no audience".

It includes the best quarantine performance and best music video from home. Other nominees include Gaga's 'Smile' from the TV special One World: Together At Home;Legend's #togetherathome concert; DJ D-Nice's Club MTV presents #DanceTogether; CNCO's MTV Unplugged At Home; and Post Malone's tribute to Nirvana.

Aside from the sin, demonstration tunes representing the Dark experience generated in the aftermath of the deaths of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery and many others earned VMA nominations.

However, Grande and Eilish were overlooked in the coveted Artist of the Year race, which comprises Lady Gaga, Megan Thee Stallion, Post Malone, Bieber, Canadian singer The Weeknd and American rapper DaBaby.

Former One Direction star Harry Styles secured three nods as did K-pop group BTS.
