Russian Federation announced at the weekend that it had approved the "world's first" COVID-19 vaccine, but has drawn criticism from global health experts for not adhering to strict testing protocols. These include the University of Oxford's vaccine being developed with AstraZeneca, as well as agreements with the BioNTech/Pfizer alliance, Valneva and GSK/Sanofi Pasteur.

As part of the agreement, the United Kingdom will fund a Phase 3 clinical trial to assess the efficacy of the vaccine on the population.

"If regulatory approval for the company's vaccine is received, the Commission would be expected to facilitate a process for allocation of the vaccine doses among the member states", Johnson & Johnson said. Furthermore, Novavax has partnered with FUJIFILM Diosynth Biotechnologies to manufacture specific components of the vaccine in the UK.

New in-principle agreements have secured 60 million doses of the Novavax vaccine and 30 million doses of the Janssen vaccine.

Results presented this month from a two-injection regimen of Novavax's vaccine, when administered with the company's immune-boosting technology, generated antibody responses that were four times higher than those seen in people who had recovered from the disease. The Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) confirmed that doses purchased by the federal government will be provided at no cost as part of Operation Warp Speed-which is the Trump administration's effort to develop and deploy a coronavirus vaccine.

On Tuesday, Russia announced that its vaccine had been approved by its health regulators-making it the world's first coronavirus vaccine to be approved.

Russian President Vladimir Putin said his daughter had already been given the vaccine. "We will be doing the end-to-end manufacturing of the vaccine, including fermentation, the drug substance (bulk antigen) and drug product (formulation and fill finish) for the vaccine", Biological E managing director Mahima Datla told TOI.
