Despite being unable to keep Ovechkin out of the goal column (twice), the Islanders are halfway to a first-round victory, after a game where they out-shot the Capitals 32-25.

It took the New York Islanders just under 13 minutes to turn certain defeat into a scintillating Game 1 victory in their playoff opener in Toronto Wednesday evening.

Trotz showed his value behind the bench when the Islanders reached the second round previous year and again in these playoffs.

Given 86% of teams that go up 2-0 in a best-of-seven series in National Hockey League history have gone on to win it, Trotz is well on the way to beating the team that let him walk rather than give him a raise after delivering the first title in franchise history. National Hockey League teams ahead two games to none have won a best-of-seven series 86.4 percent of the time.

But a big hit by team captain Anders Lee on Caps forward Nicklas Backstrom in the second seemed to swing the momentum back in favor of the Isles, who began their scoring flurry moments later when Eberle lit the lamp before the end of the period. Alex Ovechkin leads the team with 48.

"That goal at the end (of the second period) obviously gave them a little breath".

"I like our third period", Trotz said.

"We all know how to play against those kind of teams".

"Going into the third was that same mentality", he added.

Once again, pretty much the entire defense group played well.

Semyon Varlamov turned aside 23 shots, and Braden Holtby made 27 saves for the Capitals. They've got a lot of different ways they can play, and that's a great team. "It was a full team effort tonight".

Washington's penalty kill that was a ideal 14-for-14 finally allowed a goal when Nick Leddy scored a power-play goal in the second period.

After two periods with no penalties, the Islanders killed off a crucial pair of them in the third period and gave the Capitals no room to breathe at 5-on-5. "We'll play five-on-five with anyone in the league I think, but I've seen that power play up close and they're risky and you can't let that be a part of the strategy for sure". Anthony Beauvillier has four goals and four assists over the last 10 games for NY.

"It's a good feeling being up one, but there's a long way to go", Barzal ceded. And then they went on to win the Stanley Cup. Tom Wilson was credited with eight of their 17 hits. He had a hit. The Caps weren't as pleased with Lee's wallop on one of their most productive players, especially after Backstrom sat out the remainder of the game. The Capitals instead promoted assistant Todd Reirden to head coach and have not since won a playoff series. However, Boychuk did participate in the pre-game skate Wednesday and may be available for Game 2 vs. the Caps on Friday.
