Despite those efforts, acknowledgement of tight ends still lagged behind when it came to one significant area: compensation.

On Thursday the 49ers and Chiefs broke the bank for their young stars, as San Francisco gave George Kittle a five-year, $75 million deal, while the Chiefs gave Travis Kelce a four-year, $57 million deal to help reset the tight end market and give the Eagles a basepoint for Ertz's negotiations.

The deal is worth $75m, according to NFL Network, and includes $30m guaranteed at signing, $40m guaranteed for injury and an $18m signing bonus. Austin Hooper will earn $10.5 million a year on his new deal with the Cleveland Browns, while Los Angeles Chargers tight end Hunter Henry is set to make $10.6 million under the tag this season. The $30 million guaranteed at signing also is a massive jump from the previous high that was the $19.8 million the Lions gave then-rookie T.J. Hockenson a year ago. "I get paid to play football", Kittle told reporters. I will continue to work for all of you as we make the 2020 season another success.

FOX Bet has the Niners as the NFC favorites at +900 to win the Super Bowl, and you can bet that Kittle's ability is a big reason why.

Kittle responded by saying he wants to swap jerseys with Kupp, though the two will have to find a way around the NFL's rules preventing players from exchanging gear after games.

It didn't hurt that 49ers general manager John Lynch offered a unique point of view as a former player who was once in shoes similar to Kittle. You also kind of feel a responsibility to the game to the other players at your position, and so I knew we were dealing with some interesting dynamics there.

Having long-term security prior to mixing it up in training camp is something Kittle stated was important to him, an idea Niners brass clearly felt similarly about. San Francisco head coach Kyle Shanahan utilizes Kittle as one of the key blockers in his schemes. "It's an incredible locker room to be a part of and I am grateful to my brothers for making this such a fun and exciting place to play football". I don't have to worry about getting injured. I get paid to play football, and now I'm taken care of and my family is taken care of and now I can just focus on that.
