"To the people of India and to Indian Americans all across the U.S., I want to wish you a happy Indian Independence Day. I stand before you as the first candidate for vice president of the United States of South Asian descent", Harris said in her address organised by Indians for Biden National Council. "If elected president, I will continue to believe it and continue what I have long called for including standing with India and confronting threats it faces in its own region and along its borders", Joe Biden added.

"When my mother Shyamala (Gopalan) stepped off a plane in California as a 19-year-old, she didn't have much in way of belongings but she carried with her lessons from home, including ones she'd learned from her parents", she said.

Harris said it was during those protests that her mother met her father. Last week, he also called her "nasty", "the meanest", and "a mad woman", playing into racist and sexist stereotypes of Black women.

Ms Harris said that her mother, a Tamil Indian-American who became a leading cancer researcher and activist, would taker her and sister Maya to India because she wanted her daughters to understand where she had come from. "And, of course, she always wanted to instill in us, a love of good Idli", she said. He would explain that it's on us to pick up where they left off.

She also spoke about the "long walks" she took with her grand-father P.V. Gopalan, an Indian freedom-fighter, who became a civil servant and was assigned by the Indian government to help Zambia deal with its refugee problem in the late 1960s. Reflecting on the past 74 years, it's remarkable how much progress our people have made in the fight for justice.

Kamala Harris speaking during an event by "South Asian for Biden" extended wishes on India's Independence Day and said that Indian and U.S. communities are bound together shared history and culture. But we wouldn't be if we didn't commit ourselves to building an even better future. So, I hope you celebrate today, and then tomorrow, I hope you join me in getting to work, she said.
