Top-seeded Simona Halep cruised past lucky loser Magdalena Frech 6-2, 6-0 to advance to the semifinals of the Prague Open on Friday.

"She played great and it was really tough to find my rhythm", Halep said.

Down 2-0 in the final set, Halep replied by winning six consecutive games, converting her first match point when the 118th-ranked Krejcikova double-faulted. "I just stayed focused for every ball I played". Following a tight triumph over Polona Hercog, the Romanian ousted the Czech player with a wild card Barbora Krejcikova 3-6, 7-5, 6-2 in two hours and five minutes.

Pliskova added only two more aces to the 111 she had already hit this season while Mertens served seven in the match.

The top seed needed a tie-break to take the first set before running out 7-6 (7-2) 6-3 victor in an hour and 31 minutes.

"I did better than previous days".

Halep won the set in tie-break, but Begu kept fighting in the second before Halep finally prevailed. It wasn't an excellent level from me, in my opinion, but the most important thing is that I was able to win. The former fifth-ranked Canadian wasted a 4-1 lead in the second set before prevailing in the decider after nearly three hours to set up a quarterfinal against third-seeded Elise Mertens.

The 16-year-old, ranked 53 in the world, was beaten 6-2 6-4.

Sara Sorribes Tormo eased past Laura Siegemund 6-2, 6-3 to play either Irina-Camelia Begu or Leonie Kung in the quarterfinals.

The Prague Open is the second European tournament since the WTA restarted amid the coronavirus pandemic, with strict health protocols in place.
